There are seven areas that you need to question: 1. The Bakery | 2. Sales staff | 3. Displays/photos | 4. Setup arrangements | 5. Cake types/fillings | 6. Decorator’s expertise | 7. Delivery process.

This article will cover: DISPLAYS/PHOTOS.

Ask: Do you have a showroom with at least 15 actual displays so I can get a feel for your artistic ability, quality, and creativity?

Visit at least 3 baker/designers to see what they have to offer. Ask yourself, do they have enough wedding cake displays for me to feel comfortable with their artistic ability and make me believe they are experts in baking and decorating wedding cakes?

It is very important they have at least 15 wedding cake displays so you can see enough variety to understand they are great at decorating simple to elegant wedding cakes. Some bakeries only offer selections that are low-end designs and on the other hand some offer only expensive designs. Preferably, they should be able to provide a broad spectrum for every budget.

Ask: Do you have albums with at least 200 pictures and/or photos of wedding cakes?

Don’t be fooled. It doesn’t matter if they are actual wedding cakes the bakery has photographed or if they are from leading cake decorating publications. The truth is while most bakeries would love to only show their photographed wedding cakes, the pictures from leading decorating magazines are far superior in photographic quality. The photos from magazines have wonderful clarity of detail with perfect lighting for you to see the wedding cake from an optimal view.

Also, keep this point in mind; do you think a baker/designer is going to put photos of their worst decorated wedding cakes in albums for you to judge them?

If a baker/designer has a showroom with wedding cakes that are decorated in a fashion pleasing to your eye, most likely they will do a great job from the photo/pictures in their albums.

You should only worry if they don’t have adequate wedding cake displays for you to see. In that case, their photos from magazines or wedding cake publications could be misleading.

Ask: Are your wedding cake designs current and up to date?

As I state in Wedding Cake Secrets Exposed, “make sure your baker/designer is offering wedding cake designs from 2010 and after…not 1990 and a disaster.

Some cake shops and bakeries don’t update their wedding cake designs as often as they should. Wedding cake designs change like women’s clothing fashions. Great baker/designers change their wedding cake displays and designs at least twice a year to reflect the newest and best and “in” wedding cakes. Having your wedding cake stacked instead of separated is the most popular trend. Also, rolled fondant icing is very popular. Rolled fondant has been popular in Europe for over 50 years, but has only caught on in the states for the last 5-7 years. And a third trend is having an all square wedding cake or a combination of round and square tiers.

When you are looking for a baker/designer, consider cake shops/bakeries that take the time to follow trends and are offering the latest look and styles in wedding cakes. If they are not and it appears their designs are still from 1968, I suggest to…RUN!

Ask: Can I mix and match designs or do I have to take it decorated exactly the way I see the wedding cake in the picture?

Not every bride is satisfied with each bakery’s wedding cake selection. You should be able to take tier designs from different photos to create a wedding cake that is unique and fits and suits your personality. If the baker/designer doesn’t allow you to do that, it usually shows their lack of expertise or their inability to be creative. Again…RUN!
